‘Silent House’ Scares Up Theaters

A movie I have been waiting for! As a writer and avid movie fan, I try to stay open about movies coming to theaters all year round. However, my favorite genre is easily horror/thriller films. Films that range from psychological, to films with ghostly apparitions, I’m not very picky when it comes to movies that may scare others. ‘Silent House’ is that kind of film.

‘Silent House’ is a remake of the 2010 Spanish horror film ‘La Casa Muda.’ Thanks to a successful run at most of the major film festivals back in 2010, ‘La Casa Muda’ was translated into the ‘Silent House.’ This film stars Elizabeth Olsen, the sister of twins Ashley and Mary Kate Olsen. Elizabeth plays the role of Sarah, a young woman preparing to fix up her home for sale with her father and uncle. Sarah’s uncle gets in a fight with her father and drives off, leaving the two alone to fix the house for the meantime. After a series of odd noises in the house, Sarah’s father investigates and the horror starts there.

‘Silent House’ originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival with minor buzz thanks to its star and her previous critically acclaimed performance in ‘Martha Marcy May Marlene.’ The film is rated PG-13 and has received mixed reviews for its script, with considerable praise for Elizabeth Olsen‘s acting in the film. The film’s TV spots have put a large emphasis on its being “filmed in one take” over 88 minutes. Its creepy characters and noises are also very prominent.

The production of ‘Silent House’ only cost a mere $1 million, while its marketing budget is more than likely around the same amount. Having already grossed $7 million over its first weekend, while it isn’t exactly a blockbuster, it’s made back its budget and then some! This film will neither hurt nor necessarily help Elizabeth Olsen’s career, but it is sure to be a great film for a date night. ‘Silent House’ is open in theaters now.
