Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy – Sounds like a three-way match made in heaven right? You’ve almost got it! These actors are all apart of the new film, from 20th Century Fox, called ‘This Means War.’ This film revolves around Reese Witherspoon’s character, Lauren and a romantic triangle between Tuck (Tom Hardy) and FDR (Chris Pine). Both men are spies who work together and unknowingly fall for the same girl. They decide that to go along with dating the same girl and see who the best man will be.
While not terribly original, the trailer showcases three likable stars in likable, but unrealistic roles. With the addition of Chelsea Handler as Lauren’s best friend in the movie, this film is clearly skewed towards an older crowd. Chelsea curses like only she can and offers “advice” towards her best friend in dating both men. ‘This Means War’, originally meant to be released on Valentine’s Day was pushed back to February 17th, to avoid competing with ‘The Vow’, released a week earlier. Perhaps that was the right thing to do.
Releasing on a holiday, is always a risky thing to do. Big budget action films are normally released on national holidays such as Memorial Day and Labor Day in order to increase in earnings thanks to the Monday off. On Valentine’s Day, you are likely to see romantic comedies fighting for the top spot. While ‘The Vow’ certainly aimed for significant others in relationships, ‘This Means War’ tries to aim towards that demographic, in addition to a crowd more into action comedies. Sometimes the result is a film that isn’t terribly liked by the critics but a fun film for a date. This film isn’t meant for younger children to see. With action, comedy and romance all packing in one movie, it is sure to have a decent run at the Box Office and DVD sales in the future. It may not be the be all-end all of movies, but it’ll do. ‘This Means War’ is out in theaters now.
